Philippine Volcanoes wins 4th SEA Games gold for Philippines

The Philippines came out the stronger squad to start the second half, as a try by Matthew Saunders at the 11:00 mark and a conversion goal by Alexander Aronson at the 11:26 mark gave their team a 19-0 lead.

The PH Volcanoes destroyed everything in their path, capping their overpowering run with a 24-7 demolition of Malaysia in the finals.

Ranked first in the region, the Volcanoes imposed their vast experience over the field that also included Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Singapore. The Filipinos finished second when the event was last held eight years ago.

Riding high on a five-game sweep of their elimination matches, the Filipinos were in sharp form in reasserting their supremacy over the Malaysians, whom they had beaten, 14-10, earlier in the day.

It was a huge improvement for the PH rugby squad, which took the silver medal when the sport was last played in the 2007 Thailand SEA Games.

Sharing the spotlight were the Volcanoes’ female counterparts, who garnered the bronze medal after outplaying Malaysia, 22-0, in the battle for third place.
