DepEd Campaign to Fight Leptospirosis starts from Schools

The Department of Education has issued a memorandum that urges school authorities to take precautionary measures to arrest the increasing cases of leptospirosis and other health-related diseases in schools caused by flood.

Based on DepEd Memo No 153 s. 2012, Luistro ordered the mobilization of all school health and nutrition personnel to disseminate information on the prevention of diseases prevalent during the rainy season.
“We also enjoin the student governments, scouts and youth leaders to create awareness on the ill effects of leptospirosis and other water-borne diseases,” Luistro added.
Luistro also urged school heads to use all available means to make the school population aware of disease prevention through school organs, classroom discussion and even during Parent Teachers Association meeting.
Related to this, school officials are directed to collaborate with the local government units and municipal health officers for a referral system for students and teachers who show symptoms of sickness.
“It will surely help our cause if we maintain a clean environment and a well-informed citizenry on the prevention of diseases,” Luistro said.
“Take a proactive stance against water-borne diseases. Take the upper hand against leptospirosis.”

This is the call of Secretry of Education Br. Armin A. Luistro FSC as he rallies the DepEd community to take the lead in preventing the spread of leptospirosis and other diseases prevalent during the rainy season.
