Japeth Aguilar came through with a superb shooting display as Pilipinas-Smart Gilas trounced Al Ittihad of Saudi Arabia, 101-69, Saturday night in the 2011 FIBA-Asia Champions Cup at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

Aguilar was the reflection of Gilas' proficient shooting, scoring 20 points to lead the Nationals to their first win in the week-long tournament. He never missed in his 10 shots until in the 1:29 mark when the outcome of the game has already decided.

Gilas shot 43-of-70 from the field, including 38-of-58 from the two-point area and five-of-12 from three-point distance.

"It was a good game for us. We played almost the same as in our tune-up game against them prior to the tournament. We knew that we are the better team," said Gilas coach Rajko Toroman. Read More...

UFC 130: Hamill gets biggest break vs 'Rampage'

MANILA, Philippines -- The countdown is on for Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) 130, which will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday (Sunday, Manila time).

Due to injuries suffered by fighters Frankie Edgar and Grey Maynard, who were supposed to face off in UFC 130, the light heavyweight bout between Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Matt “The Hammer” Hamill will be the headliner for the pay-per-view event.

According to UFC president Dana White, Hamill will have his biggest break against mixed martial arts (MMA) superstar Jackson.

"He beat [Keith] Jardine, [Mark] Muñoz, Tito [Ortiz]… He has some good wins. A win over Rampage will be huge. This is one of those career-defining moments for Matt Hamill should he be able to pull off a win on Saturday night,” he said.

‘Big Country’ vs Mir
Meanwhile, Roy “Big Country” Nelson is looking forward to fight MMA veteran Frank Mir in the co-main event of UFC 130.

“It’s a great opportunity fighting Frank. Frank is legend of the UFC heavyweight division, he’s been in there 10-plus years,” said Nelson.

It will be Mir’s first fight in 2011.

“Roy and I are much more highlighted on this fight,” said Mir.

Also fighting in UFC 130 are Brazilian black belter Jorge Santiago and Brian “All-American” Stann.

UFC 130 will be aired locally on SkyCable’s Balls Channel and Studio 23. -- Report from Bev Llorente, ABS-CBN North America News Bureau.

Smart Gilas Pilipinas faces tough Asian test

The Smart Gilas national team won’t have any tougher tournament in preparation for the Olympic qualifiers this year than the Fiba-Asia Champions Cup opening tomorrow at the PhilSports Arena.

The Nationals will have their hands full, duking it out with the top club teams in Asia, which will be reinforced by a stellar cast of imports. Some of the clubs will also feature the core of their country’s national teams.

“It’s even tougher than the Jones Cup,” said Smart Gilas coach Rajko Toroman at a press conference hosted by Sports5 which will air the Champions Cup games live.

The Jones Cup is a prestigious annual tournament in Taiwan that lures the top nationalteams in Asia and where several Philippine teams have figured prominently in the past.

“You can just imagine the quality in [the Champions Cup]. It will be played at a high level. There will be two great imports in every team,” said Toroman. Gilas has been grouped with Malaysia, Jordan, Iraq and Saudi Arabia in the tournament. Read More...

TNT begins grand slam quest

source: Waylon Galvez | mb.com.ph

Talk ’N Text wasted no time training for the Governors’ Cup, taking advantage of its trip to this island to break its import who joined the squad today as the team started its PBA grand slam quest in earnest.

The Tropang Texters have had an extended celebration after winning the Commissioner’s Cup two weeks ago, their second straight title, giving them a chance to win a rare grand slam.

The team had previously won the Philippine Cup, the opening conference of the league, and capturing the grand slam has taken precedence over all other options for the team.

It is for this reason that the Texters, who are supposed to simply enjoy the beguiling attractions of this island, have incorporated training with recreation as the rest of the players joined their teammates who participated in the All-Star game and other PBA activities.

Texter Kelly Williams won his second slam dunk title in four years, then took part in the All-Star game with teammates Jimmy Alapag for the South while Harvey Carey and Ranidel de Ocampo suiting up for the North.

TNT coach Chot Reyes also called the shots for the South All-Stars, which lost to the North under Petron Blaze’s Ato Agustin, 133-129, last Sunday.

The Texters jogged in the morning and the coaching staff set an afternoon practice with import Maurice Baker, who is expected to arrive tomorrow.

Baker, according to Reyes, was tapped after their first choice Quincy Douby got an invitation from the NBA Veteran’s Camp, while their second prospect Scottie Reynolds sustained an injury in a recent game abroad.

Talk ’N Text also tried to acquire NBA Development League MVP Curtis Stinson of the Iowa Energy, but Barangay Ginebra beat it to the draw and got the high-scoring import instead. Baker also played in the D-League with the Dakota Wizards.

“To tell the truth, I don’t have any idea about our import. We just decided to fly in the best available player who stands 6-foot-2,” said Reyes, referring to the allowed reinforcement they can get this conference.

“We’re scrapping the bottom of the barrel. We’re hoping that he can help us,” added Reyes, whose team is set to face Ginebra and B-Meg in Dubai on June 2 and 3, although the trip might be cancelled by the PBA.

“We’re rushing because we’re working on the June 2 opening,” Reyes said.

Reyes also expressed his gratitude to the PBA Board of Governors as well as to Commissioner Chito Salud allowing Alapag and Williams to play with TNT in the Governors’ Cup before joining the Smart-Gilas Pilipinas team.

Azkals struggle vs Iloilo college team

Despite missing their key members, the Philippine Azkals were able to salvage a 1-1 draw against the collegiate line-up of the Central Philippines University (CPU) in their friendly game in Iloilo City.

The Azkals struggled against the impressive ball-handling of the CPU team, which was mainly composed of Korean college students.

The Koreans scored the first goal past Azkals goalie Christopher Camcam.

CPU appeared headed for an upset against the fancied National team, but Azkals midfielder Ricardo “Yoc” Becite struck a goal near the end of the game.

That goal allowed the Azkals to get a 1-1 draw. Read More...

2011 NBA Playoffs Team Standings- May 24, 2011

NBA 2011 Semi-Finals Team Standings as at May 24, 2011. LA Lakers conqueror, Dallas Mavericks is one game-win away to the 2011 NBA Finals where they will compete with either Chicago Bulls or Miami Heat.

Dallas Mavericks History in joining the NBA:

In 1979, businessman Don Carter and partner Norm Sonju requested the right to bring an NBA franchise to Dallas, Texas. The last professional basketball team in Dallas had been the Dallas Chaparrals of the American Basketball Association, which moved to San Antonio in 1973 to become the San Antonio Spurs.

At the 1980 NBA All-Star Game, league owners voted to admit the new team, with the team's name coming from the 1957–1962 TV westernMaverick, the name was chosen by the fans with 4600 postcards received beating Wranglers and Express. James Garner, who played the namesake character, was a member of the ownership group. There was some controversy at the time since the University of Texas at Arlingtonalso uses the Mavericks nickname. They joined the Midwest Division of the Western Conference, causing a divisional realignment with the Midwest and Central Divisions, and would stay there until the league went to six divisions for the 2004–05 season and the team moved to theSouthwest Division. Dick Motta, who had guided the Washington Bullets to the NBA Championship in 1977–78, was hired as the team's first head coach. He had a well-earned reputation of being a stern disciplinarian, but was also a great teacher of the game.

FIBA Asia Champion's Cup: Gilas coach wary of Iran, Lebanon

Pilipinas-Smart Gilas coach Rajko Toroman has always regarded back-to-back champion Mahram of Iran and Lebanon’s Al Riyadi as the teams to beat in the 22nd FIBA-Asia Champions Cup that kicks off on Saturday, May 28 at the Philsports Arena.

He’s got good enough reasons to be wary of the two basketball powers.

The Iranians and Lebanese are bringing with them rosters spiked with members of their national teams and imports with good enough credentials, further emphasizing their status as the top favorites in the May 28 to June 5 meet the country is hosting for the first time in six years.

“Iran and Lebanon will be bringing in some of the members of its national teams,"said Toroman, who’s been well-versed in both Asian and international basketball since steering the Iran national team to the FIBA Asia men’s championship in 2007 that served as its ticket meal to the Beijing Olympics a year after. Kelly Williams is again sultan of slam, Macapagal stays as 3-point king

BORACAY – Kelly Williams reclaimed the slamdunk crown with relative ease but Mark Macapagal and Jonas Villanueva went through a wringer to retain their three-point shootout and obstacle challenge titles, respectively.

It was the 2011 PBA All-Star Friday at the Boracay Eco-Village and Convention Center saved by thrilling victories by Macapagal and Villanueva.

What was expected to be a battle royal in the slamdunk contest turned to be a ho-hum event.

It was a virtual no-contest as both Gabe Norwood and Jay Washington didn’t show up and those who did just couldn’t put up a good fight no matter how hard they tried.

A routine dunk was all Williams needed to seal the win, sending him in the company of KG Canaleta and Vergel Meneses as among the only players to rule the event more than once. Read More

Gilas Pilipinas eyeing no less than finals (FIBA Asia Champions Cup 2011)

SMART Gilas-Pilipinas is eyeing nothing but a finals stint in the 22nd Intenational Basketball Federation (Fiba)-Asia Champions Cup slated next week at the PhilSports Arena.

Head coach Rajko Toroman said this year’s competition definitely would not be a walk in the park for the hosts, but with a lighter group in the classification phase and playing in front of the home crowd, reaching the gold-medal round is achievable.

“We’re aiming for a finals appearance at least and see what happens from there,”the Serbian coach said.

“We know that the Filipino fans are coming to watch and cheer for us and we don’t want to disappoint them so we will be motivated to play in the tournament,” he added.

With Alapag, Williams staying, Texters' PBA Grandslam bid on target

Talk N Text stays right on target for a rare PBA Grand Slam. That’s because team captain Jimmy Alapag and Kelly Williams, two of their best players, won’t be joining the Pilipinas-Smart Gilas in the coming FIBA Asia Champion’s Cup.

This was confirmed by Pilipinas-Smart Gilas coach Rajko Toroman to GMA News, claiming that the team has decided not to include Alapag, a co-Finals MVP winner of Jason Castro, and Williams, a former PBA MVP, in the national squad.

“We’ve decided to include only Asi Taulava and Dondon Hontiveros," Toroman said in a telephone interview. “We’ve figured that even if they join us, they will have a very short time getting accustomed to the things we’ve been doing. They’re currently on a vacation and then they will participate in the PBA All-Stars. They will just run short of time if they will join us."

Arum still waiting for Donaire

Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum is still hopeful that Filipino renegade fighter Nonito Donaire would come to his senses and rekindle his love affair with Top Rank.

"We're still waiting for him," said Arum from his Beverly Hills home, sounding a bit optimistic that Donaire would still fulfill his obligations with Top Rank.

Arum had penciled a May 28 fight for Donaire but the rising world bantamweight king suddenly bolted Top Rank and signed with the Oscar De La Hoya-owned Golden Boy Promotions after alleging that his contract with the Las Vegas-based outfit had already lapsed.

But Arum said his company remains the rightful holder of Donaire's promotional rights owing to an automatic extension of their partnership stemming from the boxer's medical suspension.Read More...

Pinoy boxers bag gold, silver in Uzbekistan

Mark Anthony Barriga outclassed hometown favoriteShahobiddin Zoirov, 4-1, to win the gold in the 2011 Sydney Jackson Memorial Boxing Championship late Friday in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

The 17-year-old lightweight Barriga used skilled footwork to outsmart the older andexperienced Zoirov, a veteran of several world championships.

“Mark [Barriga] utterly frustrated him and forced him to commit mistakes,” said Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines Executive Director Ed Picson.

Asian Games gold medalist Joan Tipon meanwhile settled for the silver medal after absorbing a close, 2-3 loss from another Uzbek boxer Shohruh Hujabekov.

“We are happy with their performance. We know where we need to step up and make the necessary adjustments. That’s the important thing, the medals are just bonuses,” said Picson.

The Philippine boxing team is not only preparing for the forthcoming Olympic qualifying rounds but also for the 2011 Southeast Asian Games slated on November in Indonesia.

Alapag, Williams can't play for TnT

Jimmy Alapag and Kelly Williams are now on loan to Smart Gilas and won’t be allowed to play for Talk n Text even for a game in the coming PBA Governors Cup.

This is the status of Alapag and Williams as far as PBA commissioner Chito Salud is concerned, discouraging the Texters from thinking they can still use the two key players in their first few games in the season-ending tourney.

“We will not allow that. It’s unfair to Air21 and Meralco which, after the second conference, readily released Dondon Hontiveros and Asi Taulava to the national team,” said Salud. “First of all, that’s the understanding of the PBA board. Read More...

Called the PBA Hala Bola! All-Star Weekend, the center of action is the BoracayConvention Center where the All-Star Game is set May 22 and the Rookies vs Sophomore Blitz Game on May 20.

“One word that could describe both the island paradise of Boracay and the Philippine Basketball Association is excitement. One can only imagine how much heat and passion can be generated when these two come together,” said PBA board chairman Rene Pardo.

“Just about everybody who hears that it’s going to be in Boracay is excited to be there,” said PBA commissioner Chito Salud. Read More...

Arum hurdles 1st test for Pacquiao-Marquez clash

LOS ANGELES — Juan Manuel Marquez has accepted the revised offer sheet that Top Rank forwarded to him, Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum said on Tuesday, a development that could very well pave the way for a planned Nov. 12 face-off against Manny Pacquiao.

Arum had earlier sent Marquez a proposal that the Mexican turned down and the Top Rank chief immediately came up with a new one that the boxer accepted.

“Everything was done the right way,” said Arum from the Las Vegas headquarters of Top Rank, referring to the manner by which Top Rank conducted its business with Marquez.
Arum said the proposal he sent to Marquez is a copycat of the one that Shane Mosley approved for his last week’s fight with Pacquiao at the MGM Grand.  Read More...

(PBA) Painters tap High Point U 6’4” frontliner

Putting premium on inside presence, Rain or Shine has tapped former High Point University star Arizona Reid as its import for the Philippine Basketball Association Governors Cup.

Reid is reportedly a 6’4” power forward known for his ferocity inside the shaded area, when he saw action for the Panthers from 2006 to 2008. If information about his height is correct, Reid fits the 6’4” height requirement for the Elasto Painters.

The Elasto Painters decided to change gear for their import, since their previous reinforcement in the Commissioner’s Cup, Hassan Adams, was a wing player, who plays finesse basketball. With Reid, Rain or Shine gets tougher on the inside.

‘’This guy is a pure inside player. He is a legit power forward and I think that’s what we need,’’ said Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao of their new import. Read More...

Fans want Pacquiao vs Mayweather

MANILA, Philippines — Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao scored another ho-hum victory by outfoxing, outhitting and overpowering Sugar Shane Mosley.

Pacquiao’s unanimous decision victory was cheered by the millions of fans over at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas and the people who watched the match via pay-per-view. Others were glued to their radios where the outcome had already been known as early as lunch time in Manila.

Among the highlights of the bout included that 3rd round knockdown and the controversial push that merited a count from referee Kenny Bayless in the 10th round. Mosley, who chose to fight defensively and dodge Manny’s attacks got booed even if the “Pambansang Kamao” tried his best to give the fans a good show.

Marquez to Pacquiao: I will give you a real fight

Juan Manuel Marquez vows to give Manny Pacquiao the kind of action Sugar Shane Mosley failed to deliver.

One of the most skilled fighters to ever come out of Mexico, Marquez looms as Pacquiao's next possible opponent later this year.

"I'm sure that when I face Manny people will see a real fight," said Marquez, who was at ringside when Pacquiao decisioned Mosley in a lopsided fight for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight championship belt last Saturday (Sunday in Manila) in Las Vegas.

"People wanted to see a fight and unfortunately the styles (of Mosley and Pacquiao) did not accommodate them (crowd)," said Marquez, who would be turning 38 should a third and final fight with the Filipino boxing superstar pushes through in November. Read More...
