From a pool of cellar teams in Asia, the Philippines will square off with Sri Lanka in the first round of the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers announced in the draw of lots held in the AFC office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The first two stages of the World Cup qualifiers will be played in a home-away format, with the first leg pegged on June 29 this year in Sri Lanka before shifting to the Philippines on July 3 with a venue yet to be decided.

If the Azkals, ranked 151 overall, manage to overcome Sri Lanka, ranked 173, they will have their mettle tested right away against Kuwait in the second round.

Kuwait is ranked 48 places above the Philippines in the Fifa rankings.

"We have the chance to scout Sri Lanka in Nepal (as they plan in the AFC Challenge Cup), Kuwait is a strong team but hopefully everything is possible," said Azkals coach Michael Weiss.

Azkals eye medal finish in SEAG

The Philippines has never won a medal of any color in the men’s football event of the Southeast Asian Games since its debut in the biennial meet in 1977.

Seeking to end the drought, Azkals team manager Dan Palami has vowed to form the strongest football squad ever.

“I think we can safely say we will be forming the strongest team for the Southeast Asian Games,” said Palami, who will also stand as team manager of the national team to the SEA Games set in Indonesia this November.

He said chances are strong to contend for a medal considering that six players from the Philippine Azkals are eligible to play in the under-23 tournament.

The six players are goalkeeper Neil Etheridge, 21, reliever Christopher Camcam, 16, defender David Basa, 21, striker Yannick Tuason, 21, who are both members of the University of Santo Tomas football team, and Fil-German Patrick Hinrichsen, 20, and Fil-Dutch Jason de Jong, 21.

They don’t need to try out for the team. I think with their level of play, they should be automatically included in the team,” Palami said.

"I hope we can win the medal under my leadership. That's all our aim," Philippine Football Federation president Mariano Araneta, a former member of the national team from 1975 to '80s, said.

Malaysia is the defending SEA Games champion, with Vietnam and Singapore as the second and third place finishers.

Azkals head coach Hans Michael Weiss will mentor the squad, which he hopes to be boosted with top-calibre players from Europe. The German coach, together with Rob Gier will soon fly to Germany to scout for players.

“So far, there are at least 30 players who expressed their desire to join the Sea Games team,” Palami said.

Azkals team captain Aly Borromeo and Anto Del Rosario will conduct tryouts for the under-23 event on April 9-10 in Daly City, California.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Azkals opponent for the Round 1 of the qualifying tournament for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil will be known Wednesday as the draw will be held in Kuala Lumpur.

Donaire Vs Montiel Replay Feb 20 2011

Donaire and Montiel are both wary of each other's strengths and weaknesses and both want to capitalize on those and both want the fight to end up with a knockout victory.

Donaire's Strength lies on his punching power and speed. Donaire is also a smart fighter. Montiel on the other hand also has a lot of strength, particularly on his left hand which can be quite tricky since he's an orthodox boxer. Montiel is also the more experienced fighter, so he could use a lot from his experience when he fights the younger and less experienced Donaire.

Azkals start gearing up for World Cup

INTENSIVE scouting in three continents for new players plus four training camps beginning early May will form part of the national team build-up for the Asian World Cup qualifiers in late June, according to coach Hans Michael Weiss.

"We will have a break until close to end of the month, after which the coaches have been instructed to start looking for new players locally, particularly in the Under-23 and Under-19 competitions that will begin shortly," Weiss said.

He said team manager Dan Palami and midfielder Anton del Rosario, who left for the United States last Monday, will also hold tryouts in San Francisco on April 9 and 10, with at least 45 hopefuls from both the East and West Coasts, along with Canada, signing up.

"As for myself, I shall be leaving for Germany to conduct my own screening around Easter time," Weiss said. "We would like to form the best possible team for the Asian World Cup series."

Among the Filipino-Germans he would likely tap, Weiss said, are midfielders Manuel Ott, 19, and Stefan Schrock, 25, who are playing with German Second Division teams.

Weiss added he’s in constant touch with Filipino-British defender Rob Gier to help him recruit prospects for the national squad.

"I would like to see younger players joining the team, but we have to take it step by step," said Weiss, adding the first training camp-cum-open tryouts will be set on May 9-26 "which I would prefer to be held outside Manila."

"We will also make this camp the start of our conditioning for the players," said fitness coach Joseph Malinay.

The camp on May 27-June 2, Weiss said, will be a "recreation camp," possibly in Cebu, to increase rapport and camaraderie among the potential national team members whose families will be allowed to join them.

After a five-day respite, Weiss said he hopes to have a complete 23-man roster when the Nationals leave for Australia where they will hold camp in Melbourne from June 7-18. He said they are expected to play at least five matches with Australian sides.

The Azkals will complete the final phase of their training in the country on June 21-27, two days before the first match of the World Cup home-and-away series.

The draw for the Asian Word Cup opening round qualifying matches will be held today at the AFC headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, with Weiss saying he intends to "form a strong and competent team that can go up against any opponent that we face."

"If all of our plans fall into place–players, logistics, training, etc.–I believe we do have a have a chance against any squad," Weiss said.

"However, should we be drawn against countries like Uzbekistan, Qatar or the United Arab Emirates, then we will have a challenging time under the home-and-away format," Weiss. "But this is football, so anything is possible."

Philippine Football Federation chief Mariano Araneta Jr., who arrived yesterday from an AFC meeting in Vietnam, said he’s hoping the Philippines would not be drawn against a strong squad.

"Hopefully it won’t be against strong countries like Malaysia or Vietnam," Araneta said. "If we’re lucky, we might get Mongolia again or even Macau."

PINOY PRIDE 5 TEASER SPOT: DONNIE NIETES

Pinoy Pride 5- Topbills by Nietes

CEBU, Philippines - No doubt he has been one of the most successful boxers of his generation being the second longest reigning Filipino champion, and now WBO minimumweight king Donnie “Ahas” Nietes is setting his sights on his next goal – to become a multi-titled boxing champion.

The ALA Gym stalwart is ready for another big step in his career as he moves up from 105 lbs. to 108 lbs. or the light flyweight division following the steps of multi-titled Pinoy champs like Manny Pacquiao and Nonito Donaire Jr.

His journey for another world title belt will start this April 9, where he will be put to the test against Mexican Armando Vasquez in the main event of “Pinoy Pride 5: Battle of Champions” at De La Salle Coliseum in his hometown in Bacolod City.

“This will be a very good thing for Donnie,” said ALA Promotions president

Michael Aldeguer during the press conference held yesterday at Diamond Suites and Residences.

“We had a chance to talk to WBO president Paco Varcarcel and even he also said that Nietes really needs to move up to a higher division.”

In the event that he will get past Vasquez, Nietes will be fighting the winner of the April 30 rematch against Jesus Gelez and Ramon Garcia for the WBO interim title.

Suntok Ginto

One year and four months to go before the London Olympics which will happen from 27th of July to 12th of August 2012 , the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) has launched Suntok Ginto, a ‘‘bayanihan’’ effort which aims to raise funds to help elite Filipino boxers pursue the country's golden dream in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
From its nationwide search program, ABAP identified a few boxers that can be developed into Olympic champions.
Asian Games gold medalist Rey Saludar and his brother Victorio, the bronze medal winner, are at the forefront of boxing's quest for gold in London. The others in the fold are Gerson Nietes, Charly Suarez, James Boy Vicera, Joegin Ladon, Delfin Boholst and Wilfredo Lopez.
With women's boxing making its Olympic debut in 2010, ABAP also has a formidable team with Guangzhou Asian Games silver medalist Annie Albania, Southeast Asian Games winners Josie Gabuco and Alice Kate Appari and new finds Annaliza Cruz and Nesthy Petecio.
SM and Banco de Oro have already thrown their full support to the team. Suntok Ginto donation boxers can now be found in SM branches nationwide. Others donations may be coursed through any BDO branches. SGV & Co. will be the external auditor of ABAP.
"Our fans are tired of silver and bronze, we want gold this time," said coach Nolito Velasco.

Boxing has accounted for most of country’s medals in the post-war Olympics with Anthony Villanueva winning a silver medal in the 1964 Olympics and Mansueto "Onyok" Velasco the other silver 32 years later in Atlanta. In between, Leopoldo Serrantes (1988 Seoul Olympics) and Roel Velasco (1992 Barcelona Olympics) accounted for the country's two bronze medals.
The ABAP has continued to be a result-oriented organization since the time of the Paranaque Rep. Roilo Golez. It has a new management team in top corporate executives Manny V. Pangilinan, Ricky Vargas and Pato Gregorio, and with Ed Picson as its executive director.

London Underground to get 120 WiFi hotspots in advance of the 2012 Olympics

A big announcement arrived today if you live in or around London: to prepare to the onslaught of data-hungry visitors for the 2012 Olympic games that the city is hosting, 120 WiFi hotspots are being added to various locations along the Underground subway system's stations and platforms, in addition to other measures being taken to beef up tech. No WiFi will be in the actual tunnels, mind you, but it should definitely come in handy for all those tourists trying to find their way around the city. British Telecom has already tolled out a trial run at the Charing Cross station, with further installations expected in the lead up to the games.

CUELLO STOPS CHAIYONG IN NINE ROUNDS

WBC International minimumweight titlist Denver “The Excitement” Cuello Singwangcha won by 9th round technical knockout against Samat Chaiyong of Thailand in a fight held at the Ynares Gym in Angono, Rizal Saturday night.

Samat or Samrtlek, was on the defensive from the opening round as he used the entire ring to circle out of harm's way. But Cuello caught up in the 4th and targeted the Thai's midsection. The southpaw from Ilolio then landed a series of powerful lefts to Chaiyong's head.

Chaiyong was reeling from the 5th to the 8th rounds. He was getting predictable as he would just occasionally wing a right in trying to stop Cuello's assault. In the 9th round, Cuello trapped Chaiyong in the blue corner and landed a hail of power punches prompting referee Bruce McTavish to save the Thailander from further punishment.

In an e-mail message, Promoter Aljoe Jaro was impressed with Chaiyong's durability but he had no doubt Cuello was in control. Jaro is expecting a title shot for the 24 year old Cuello later this year.

In a WBC minimumweight title eliminator last year in Mexico against Juan Hernandez, Cuello suffered a DQ loss when he already had Hernandez down in the 3rd round.

In other televised fights on GMA TV, undefeated superbantamweight Ernie Sanchez beat a game Jog Alim by 8th round TKO. Alim went down in the opening round but slowly worked his way back into the fight. In the 8th, a series of shots sent Alim down again and the referee waved the fight off at the 1:18 mark.

Lionel Legada Singwangcha won the PBF minimumweight belt after getting the judges' nod against Jetli Purisima after ten entertaining, give and take rounds.

The fight card was presented also by Thai Promoter Naris Singwangcha who has been sponsoring and co-promoting Cuello's fights.

Team Pilipinas 2012- RP launches Olympic Quest

A youth-laden Philippine team teeming with talent embarks on a mission to clinch an Olympic berth for the country for the first time in four decades.

Chris Tiu and Mark Barroca head the RP team roster composed of the country’s top collegiate stars and backstopped by a tall Fil-Am cager from the Visayas with a couple of US-based cagers being considered to further strengthen the squad.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Manny V. Pangilinan presented the Smart Gilas Pilipinas national team Wednesday night in a kickoff to the country’s ambitious bid of claiming a berth in the 2012 Olympics in London.

“Our goal is for the Philippines to be put back in the world map because the last time we qualified in the Olympics was in 1972,” said Pangilinan in the event launch at the Teatrino of the Promenade in Greenhills, San Juan.

“It is important to achieve success not just in the SEABA (Southeast Asian Basketball Association) and the SEAG (Southeast Asian Games). To qualify in the 2012 Olympics is our main objective. Truly, the quest begins,” Pangilinan said.

Joining Tiu, who led Ateneo to last year’s UAAP championship, and Barroca, an FEU standout, in the team are Dylan Ababou of UST, JR Cawaling, Aldrech Ramos and Mac Baracael of FEU, Ford Arao and Ryan Buenafe of Ateneo, JV Casio of La Salle, Rey Guevarra and RJ Jazul of Letran, Jason Ballesteros of San Sebastian and Magi King Sison of UP and of 6-11 Fil-Am Gregory Slaughter of the University of Visayas.

SBP executive director Noli Eala said last year’s UAAP MVP Rabeh Al-Hussaini of Ateneo and Paul Lee of UE will join the team after Season 72 of the UAAP while US-based Japeth Aguilar and Giancarlo Chiu and Cebu sensation Junimar Fajardo are also being considered.

Eala said the team is also looking for a tall, athletic naturalized player who can help the Nationals inside.

Others who graced the presentation were US Ambassador Kristie Kenney, SBP vice chair and boxing chief Ricky Vargas, Smart Sports chief Patrick Gregorio, Philippine Sports commissioners Fr. Vic Uy and Eric Loretizo, Philippine Olympic Committee board members Mark Joseph of swimming and Steve Hontiveros of bowling and Milo best’s Nic Jorge.

Serbian coach Rajko Toroman, who steered Iran to the FIBA-Asia Championship title and a slot in the last Beijing Olympics, will coach the Smart-powered quintet.

“This is a momentous occasion for us, we’ve now started to pursue a dream,” said Eala. “The last time we were considered an Asian power was in 1985 during the NCC days. Now we are ranked low by FIBA and I would not accept that the Philippines is too far behind.”

“Before, we’re used to rely on pick-up basis in forming a team, now we have a team to call our own,” Eala said.

“Smart along with our 36 million subscribers will cheer and pray for the team’s success,” said Gregorio.

Forming a team, however, was the most difficult part.

“At first, there were skepticisms in the program but I said let’s go for it, let’s try to do our best,” said Pangilinan.

He said the country should be grateful for the sacrifices of the players.

The last RP team that made it to the Olympics was coached by Ignacio “Ning” Ramos and headed by Ed Ocampo, Narciso Bernardo, Jimmy Mariano, Danny Florencio, William “Bogs” Adornado, Freddie Webb and Manny Paner in the 1972 Munich Games.
